Teen Night at US Botanical Garden; take-a-break space available with sensory-supports

AJE is happy to share this information from the U.S. Botanical Garden!

Teen Night is back and accessible –  We will have a take-a-break space available that evening along with all our sensory-supports! Thank you to everyone who attended last year’s pilot Teen Night at the U.S. Botanic Garden, and thank you for your feedback.  We heard you –  you loved the evening and wished there was more to do, and that there was food.  We have planned Teen Night 2020 with all of your feedback in mind.  Join us on January 11, 2020 in our Conservatory for a night of science, art, and food.  Please share this email with your friends.  This is a night just for you.

  • Mural Coloring: Help us create a giant botanical mural – once finished it will end up in a local school!
  • Microscopes: Explore the evolution of sexual reproduction in plants by examining mosses, ferns, and seed plants under microscopes. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to discuss how plants have changed over time.
  • Journal Making: Every great botanist needs a handy field journal! Craft your journal and decorate the cover using pressed USBG plants.  Learn about the US Exploring Expedition and the National Herbarium.
  • Plant-a-Pizza: Make your own plant-able recycled seed paper with oregano seeds, basil seeds, and tomato seeds. Learn how to plant a pizza garden, and then get your ticket for pizza! (We will have a vegan/vegetarian station).
  • Botanical Hand Salve: Make your own plant-based balm for chapped hands. Learn the medicinal and therapeutic uses of plants as you craft a tin of salve.
  • Pot-a-Plant: Pot up a cacti or succulent to take home. Discover the very different adaptations of desert and rainforest plants.
  • Fiber Investigation: A company is trying to sell a high-priced fabric billed as “all-natural”. Are they telling the truth or selling snake oil? Pull out those cell phones and strap on a micro-band (yes, you get to take it with you) to investigate the company’s claims and determine the differences between natural and synthetic fibers.
  • Chocolate & Vanilla: Learn how we get the delicious products we know and love from two very different plants – and then taste them!

Things to remember:
