COMMUNITY EVENT – CivicFest

August 3, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm
  • This event has passed.

CivicFest is a free event combining music, dance, art, volunteer opportunities, fun and thought-provoking workshops and more on Saturday, August 3rd from 12-8 pm at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park in Columbia Heights.

Get inspired to work together in your community with joy and kindness — and to find practical ways to get involved.  Help create a movement in DC to build the civic culture we all need to elect better leaders, enact better policies, and weave a civic fabric of empathy, hope and wisdom!

Learn about or volunteer with nearly 40 nonprofit organizations – ranging from tutoring and mentoring, to food equity, to civic and economic justice organizations. Learn about the critical issues facing our community and the work that needs to be done to build a safer, more equitable, and more compassionate DC.

Enjoy the community, too: Picnic under the trees, visit the Kids Zone to get your face painted (no matter what your age), join the “Moving Mountains” Improv workshop, participate in free yoga or meditation activity, learn about nature and the park’s history on the Park Walk … and much more.

CivicFest partners with Heal & Release DC, led by DeepJust and Aphrosoul Lukumi.  Heal & Release combines wellness activities such as reiki, yoga, and qigong (tai chi) with “an eclectic blend of deep metaphysical alternative dance music to feed the soul.” As Aphrosoul put it, quoting Michael Brody, ‘If we can dance together, we can live together.” DCTMI hopes this shared experience will support our long-term goal of getting people to work together across class, race, and ideology to make a better world.
