Under a grant from the District of Columbia Developmental Disabilities Council, AJE has expanded it’s Transition Advocacy Project through the creation of the Self-Determination & Advocacy Program (SDAP); a program created to promote and support self-advocacy, self-determination, and involvement in educational and medical decision making in transition aged youth and adults (ages 14-30). Like other AJE programs, SDAP serves to empower youth through mentorship opportunities, workshops, and real-life applications. Youth and young adults who successfully complete the program will be eligible to attend a transition conference and participate in graduation.
To be eligible to participate in the Self-Determination and Advocacy program participants must:
· Be between the ages of 14-30
· Be a youth or young adult with a developmental disability
· Complete the application enclosed
Some of the workshops will cover the following topics:
· Self-confidence, pride and creativity
· Ability to initiate and take action when needed
· Assuming a meaningful role in the transition planning process
· Involvement in postsecondary education and work-related self-advocacy
· Activities to understand the unique healthcare needs
