DC Health and the District of Columbia Perinatal Quality Collaborative (DC PQC) are happy to announce that they are partnering with an initiative called Count the Kicks to raise awareness of paying attention to babies’ movements in the third trimester of pregnancy. This initiative provides evidence-based interventions and training to families and healthcare providers, aiming to reduce the stillbirth rate in Washington, D.C.
Trying to bring light to stillbirths and how to avoid them, Count the Kicks encourages parents to monitor their baby’s movements once a week starting at 28 weeks. This is because a change in a baby’s movements are one of the maternal warning signs that there might be an issue developing during pregnancy.
In order to assist expectant mothers and parents, healthcare providers and organizations can order free educational materials about movement patterns in English, Spanish, Chinese, French, and German. These materials include informational brochures, app cards, and posters about Count the Kicks information. There are also resources specifically for maternal caregivers and agencies, such as a Doula’s guide to Count the Kicks and printable charts. Finally, there is an app available for expectant parents that make it easier to track the baby’s movements.
We encourage you to take advantage of these resources! Taking a look at some of the available materials and having this information is crucial. If you have any questions about this initiative, you can call Count the Kicks at 515-650-8685 or email them at info@countthekicks.org. More information is available below, such as links to the organization and informational materials.
