State Board to hold monthly public meeting on January 21.
To hear from members of the public and discuss how community schools serve specific school community needs.
The State Board of Education will convene for its monthly public meeting next Wednesday, January 21, at 5:30 pm. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and testify on the education matters important to them.
Expert Panel Discussion
During the meeting, the State Board will host a panel to explore how community schools serve as a value-add for students, families, and neighborhoods through strategic pooling of resources; how community schools are shown to reduce chronic absenteeism, strengthen academic achievement, bolster students’ social-emotional learning and well-being, and set them up for success after high school; and how to address the costs of establishing, sustaining, and scaling community schools. Panelists will include:
- Anna Maier, Senior Policy Advisor and Researcher, LPI
- José Muñoz, President, Education Commission of the States
- Julia Baez, CEO, Baltimore’s Promise and former Lead for Baltimore Community Schools
- Monique Baker, Program Director, Communities in Schools of the Nation’s Capital
Meeting details
The State Board’s meeting will be held in the Old Council Chambers in the Marion S. Barry, Jr. Building, located at 441 4th Street NW. It will also be streamed live via the District Knowledge Network. The agenda and materials for the meeting can be accessed here.

About the D.C. State Board of Education
The D.C. State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia. The State Board is made up of nine elected representatives, one representing each of the district’s wards, and one representing DC at large. There are also four appointed student representatives. The State Board advises the Office of the State Superintendent on education matters, sets academic standards and graduation requirements, and oversees the Office of Ombudsman and the Office of the Student Advocate.
