Important Reminder for Parents: Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI) Policy

We want to ensure that you have all the information you need about Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI). This is a vital resource for families when students need to learn at home or in the hospital because of a health need.

Key Information for Parents:

  • Where to Find HHI Policies: Each Local Education Agency (LEA) is required to post their HHI policies on their website. This makes it easier for you to access the information you need.
  • Contact Person: Look for a designated contact person on the website or ask staff who that person is. This individual is there to answer any questions you might have about HHI and to assist you.
  • DC Law requires families to request an HHI application and the school to provide it, AJE encourages families to complete the application even if school staff tells you that your child is not eligible to protect your rights.

Useful Resources:

To learn more about HHI and what it means for your child, check out these helpful links from OSSE:

These resources can provide you with detailed information about HHI and how it can support your child’s education during challenging times – it is important to know that this is what OSSE, DC’s State Educational Agency, is telling schools to do.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the designated contact at your school  and contact AJE if you have questions. Remember that you have a right to apply to the program if you think your child needs to temporarily learn at home (or in the hospital) because of their health.

AJE is also here to help you navigate this important support program.
