MySchoolDC Update:  Post-Lottery Application Available!

AJE is excited to share this update from MySchoolDC about the post-lottery application that is available for families!

Families can still apply to public schools for SY2021-22:

If you missed the lottery application deadlines, you can still apply to DCPS and public charter schools for school year 2021-22 by submitting a post-lottery application today. The application is available in English and Spanish. Application instructions are available in Amharic (አማርኛ፤), French (Français), Chinese (中文) and Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt) and we have a multilingual hotline to support.

Post-lottery applicants are automatically added to schools’ waitlists in the order their application is received and below applicants who applied by the lottery deadlines. The only exception to this is for applicants that qualify for a lottery preference. Learn more here.

You can begin your school search using the School Finder. View schools with short waitlists here.

Reminder: You DO NOT have to submit a My School DC application if you will re-enroll at your current school or enroll at your DCPS in-boundary school for grades K-12. You DO need to submit a My School DC application if you are applying to a DCPS or public charter PK3 and PK4 program, including the PK program at your DCPS in-boundary school.

Questions? Contact the My School DC Hotline Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at (202) 888-6336 or email info.myschooldc@dc.gov.

How Waitlists Work:

How WLs Work (ENG)

Is your child currently on a school’s waitlist? If so, read below! We’ve compiled some helpful tips to better understand what a waitlist is and what your child’s options are at this time.

What is a waitlist?

When a school has more applicants than spaces, students who are not matched to the school through the lottery or students who apply post-lottery are placed on the school’s waitlist. You may log into your family account to know your waitlist status in real time.

What does being on a waitlist mean for my family?

An offer from a waitlist is not guaranteed and many schools typically stop making waitlist offers in October. If a school makes an offer, you will receive an email from My School DC with the number of days you have to enroll your child at the school. You can accept or decline the offer. More here.

What happens if I accept an offer and enroll? Am I taken off other waitlists?

It depends on where that school falls in your order of schools on your application. More here.

Do waitlists at certain schools move more quickly than others?

Yes. Take a look at seats offered in the lottery and historical waitlist movement by school on our data page to get a sense of how waitlists have moved in past lottery years.

What are my options at this point?

1. You can add schools to your child’s My School DC application. Visit our 2021-21 short waitlist page and search by school, grade or ward for schools where waitlists are shortest.

2. If you applied to PK3 or PK4, you can also take a look at options outside My School DC.

3. If your child will attend grades K-12, you always have the option of enrolling them directly at their DCPS in-boundary school. Enter your address into our School Finder and filter by “Display in-boundary schools only” to locate your DCPS in-boundary schools.
