Disability and Language: Journey to Inclusion Series

AJE is happy to share this event  series with you from the Presidents’ Council on Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy!

Words matter. Wherever foundations may be on their journeys to inclusion, questions arise about how to talk about disability. For instance: Should we say “people with disabilities” or “disabled people”? Is it ok to say the word “disability”? What terms and language are empowering and respectful? How is the language of disability evolving?

Disability & Philanthropy Forum members are invited to learn about key aspects of disability and language from Emily Ladau, Digital Content and Community Manager for the Forum and Editor in Chief of Rooted in Rights. She has written for outlets including HuffPost and The New York Times, and authored the forthcoming book, Demystifying Disability: What to Know, What to Say, and How to be an Ally. Emily will be in conversation with Presidents’ Council Communications Strategist Gail Fuller.

This session is the second of the 2021 Journey to Inclusion Series, which includes four learning sessions for Disability & Philanthropy Forum members. Each event will include a 30-minute interview followed, Q&A, and facilitated breakout rooms.

Join us on our learning journey as we delve into the following topics:
May 13: Disability Language
July 8: Disability Participation: Demographic Tracking and Self-identification
October 21: Disability in the Workplace: Human Resources and Employee Participation
