Advocates for Justice and Education, Inc.

Named ‘One of the Best’ Nonprofits by the Catalogue for Philanthropy

Washington, D.C. – After an intentional application and selection process, the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington has selected Advocates for Justice and Education, Inc. (AJE) to be part of the Class of 2021-22.   AJE has undergone a rigorous review process conducted by a team of 170+ local community advocates and has been found to be a critical local nonprofit. Potential donors can be confident that the nonprofits in the Catalogue are worthy of their support.

Founded in 1996, AJE seeks to empower families, youth, and the community to be effective advocates to ensure that children and youth, particularly those who have special needs, receive access to appropriate education and health services. AJE is the federally designated Parent Training and Information Center and Family-to-Family Health Information Center for the District of Columbia. We fight to eliminate barriers and dismantle inequitable systems that impede families and their children’s access to equitable educational and health services.

This year, the Catalogue’s volunteer review team helped select 87 nonprofits to feature in the print edition, almost half of which are new to the Catalogue this year. Over 70% of the organizations are women-led, and over 40% are BIPOC-led. The network now includes 400+ vetted nonprofits working in the arts, education, environment, and human services sectors throughout Greater Washington.

“People want to get involved in their community—they want to make a difference, close to home. Based on our rigorous review process, we believe that AJE is a critical local nonprofit in our region,” says Matt Gayer, Co-Executive Director of the Catalogue for Philanthropy.

“Protecting the civil rights of students and families and supporting families in building power is the heart of our work and is critical to achieving equity, dismantling racism and barriers in education and health,” says Rochanda Hiligh-Thomas, Executive Director of AJE.  “We help families through direct services, training, and advocacy to increase their knowledge and capacity to advocate for their children and systemic changes to achieve their goals.”  “The Catalogue’s selection of AJE into the Class of 2021-22 is an honor and an important accomplishment for us; it will help to amplify our work, introduce new people to our mission and our funding needs, and help strengthen our organization through the Catalogue’s programs.”

The Catalogue believes in the power of small nonprofits to spark big change. And they believe in AJE to continue to further that positive change, working each day to lift up, strengthen, and enrich our local community.
