State Board Monthly Public Meeting: Next Week

State Board to hold monthly public meeting next week.

To hear from members of the public and discuss restorative justice.

The State Board of Education will convene for its monthly public meeting next Wednesday, October 15, at 5:30 pm. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and testify on the education matters important to them.

 

Expert Panel Discussion

During the meeting, the State Board will host a panel to discuss best practices that schools and Local Education Agency leaders can do to center victims more in restorative justice. Panelists will include:

  • Dr. Justin Allen, Assistant Professor, Educational Psychology, Texas A&M University, Virtual Testimony
  • Megan Challender, Director of Legal Services, Volare
  • Nancy Duchesneau, Research Senior Manager, EdTrust
  • Yazid Jackson, Director, Restorative DC
  • Nadiya Pope, Education Justice Attorney, Advocates for Justice and Education, Inc. (AJE)

 

Meeting details.

The State Board’s meeting will be held in the Old Council Chambers in the Marion S. Barry, Jr. Building, located at 441 4th Street NW. It will also be streamed live via the District Knowledge Network. The agenda and materials for the meeting can be accessed here.

Those interested in testifying should register before 5:30 pm on Monday, October 13.

 

About the D.C. State Board of Education

The D.C. State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia. The State Board is made up of nine elected representatives, one representing each of the district’s wards, and one representing DC at large. There are also four appointed student representatives. The State Board advises the Office of the State Superintendent on education matters, sets academic standards and graduation requirements, and oversees the Office of Ombudsman and the Office of the Student Advocate.
